Many foreign nationals have been arrested after crossing into Poland from Belarus, Warsaw said on Sunday, warning of greater potential before the EU summit to increase sanctions in Belarus.

Police said on Twitter that 50 refugees crossed the EU-NATO border that was heavily guarded near the town of Starzyna “forcibly” on Saturday.

All were arrested later, the border guard said, adding that he could see the barbed-wire signs on the Belarusian side “a great attempt to cross the border today”.

Thousands of people from the Middle East are camping on the EU-Belarus border, sparking tensions between the EU and the US on the one hand and Belarus and its ally Russia on the other.

Western nations oppose the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko government engineering problem this by encouraging refugees to come to Belarus and take them to the border.

Belarus denies the allegations and criticizes the West.

“If anyone thinks that Lukashenko or Belarus will be shaken, this will not happen,” he said. Lukashenko, referring to himself in the third person, said in an interview with the Russian security magazine released on Saturday.

Aid agencies say at least 10 people have died so far and have warned of an emergency situation as the temperature drops below the mark, urging that the reduction help the migrants.

In the largest camp, near the village of Bruzgi in Belarus, Belarusian authorities estimate that there are 2,000 people, including pregnant women and children.

Belarusian officials have provided assistance in addition to tents and heating – a move that could make the camp permanently on the eastern EU border.

Poland has refused to allow immigrants to enter and has criticized Belarus for barring them from leaving.

EU foreign ministers are due to meet on Monday to increase sanctions already imposed on Belarus for fighting Lukashenko’s opponents, who have ruled the country for nearly 30 years.

EU Commissioner for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell said ministers would allow everyone to “participate in the refugee trade” in Belarus, including airlines, travel agencies and officials.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said one of the measures being considered is “a complete closure of the border for the government to withdraw any economic benefits”.

One of the routes for refugees has passed through Turkey, which has flights to Belarus.
