India and Sri Lanka has established the Parliamentary Friendship Association, with Minister Chamal Rajapaksa, the older brother of the ruling Sri Lankan nation, as their president.
The agreement was in the past and is being revived in the current Parliament, elected in August 2020.
Speaking at a ceremony in Parliament here, the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister, GL Peiris, also spoke of the “very prosperous relationship” between India and Sri Lanka, where he noted that the “greatest gift” India has given to Sri Lanka was Buddhism.
Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay said the agreement would “further” promote the exchange of Parliament between the two democracies and strengthen their ties.
Opponents of Rauff Hakeem, MA Sumanthiran and V. Radhakrishnan, respectively. representing Sri Lanka Muslims, northern Tamil and Malaiyaha (mountains) minority Tamil, was elected president of the commission, reporters from the Indian High Commission in Colombo said.
